The initial market offering from AlbaTERN is centred on harnessing one of Scotland’s most abundant natural resources; waves. With a high proportion of all of Europe’s acknowledged wave energy resource, Scotland is the logical home for any company looking to develop in the wave energy market. Its extensive coastline and network of islands also create the perfect environment for perfecting the technology.

The concept is unique in terms of the current visible concepts within the renewables market. A fully modular self regulating design allows for maximum energy capture from the passing waves while allowing for protection from extremes of weather that are inevitable for such devices. Clever management of device buoyancy, wave motion and an abundance of sea water will allow a pressure head of water to be generated within the system. This pressure will be used to generate electricity which can then be fed ashore through umbilical cables as is standard within the industry.
To date basic modeling and design work has been completed and this has indicated that there is considerable potential within this device. The partners are confident that the project is ready to be taken to the formal feasibility study and prototyping phase.
